Welcome to Bangladesh Power Innovation Ltd. (BPIL)! For years, we have successfully contributed to the development of substations and power distribution systems across Bangladesh. Continuing this legacy of excellence, we now bring you cutting-edge Power Factor Improvement (PFI) Panels to boost the efficiency and reduce unnecessary costs in your industrial facilities, commercial buildings, or any large establishment’s electrical system. For energy savings and precise power distribution in Bangladesh, BPIL’s PFI panels are your ultimate solution. Simply search “PFI” online, and our website will be at your fingertips!

What is Power Factor and Why is it Crucial?

In simple terms, Power Factor is a measure of the efficiency of your electrical system. We primarily pay our electricity bills for the amount of electricity we use to do work (known as Active Power – kW). However, in industrial factories or commercial establishments, equipment like motors, transformers, and lighting also create another type of power in the electrical lines, called Reactive Power – kVAR. This reactive power doesn’t directly perform any useful work, but the electricity provider (like BPDB) still has to supply it.

When the amount of this reactive power increases in your facility, your power factor decreases. A low power factor means your facility is drawing more electricity than necessary to perform the same work, putting a strain on the electricity provider and, crucially, increasing your electricity costs.

What are the Risks of a Low Power Factor?

A low power factor negatively impacts your electricity bills and electrical equipment. The main consequences include:

  • Higher Electricity Bills and Penalties: Electricity distribution companies in Bangladesh (like BPDB) impose additional charges or penalties if your power factor falls below a certain threshold. For instance, since the year 2000, the enforcement of penalties for power factors below 0.90 has become stricter and more common.
  • Equipment Damage and Reduced Lifespan: A low power factor means excessive current flow, which puts additional stress on your electrical motors, transformers, and other equipment. This causes them to overheat, reduces their efficiency, and significantly shortens their operational lifespan.
  • Voltage Drop: Excessive current flow can lead to a drop in voltage, which affects the performance and reliability of your machinery.
  • Reduced Cable Capacity: The flow of excess current through cables reduces their effective capacity and increases their temperature, which can be hazardous.

How BPIL's PFI Panels Solve Your Problems?

BPIL’s Power Factor Improvement (PFI) panels efficiently control this reactive power, optimizing your power factor to an ideal level. Our PFI panels primarily consist of Capacitor Banks and an Automatic Power Factor Controller (APFC Relay).

  • Role of Capacitors: The capacitors supply reactive power, satisfying your system’s unnecessary reactive power demand and reducing the need to draw excess current from the main electricity line.
  • Role of APFC Relay (The Brain of the PFI Panel): This device continuously monitors the system’s power factor and automatically switches capacitor banks ON or OFF as needed, maintaining the power factor at an ideal level (typically 0.98 or higher).

This automatic process positively impacts your electricity bills, enhances equipment protection, and significantly boosts the overall efficiency of your electrical system.

Power Factor Calculation: How is Necessary KVAR Determined?

To determine the required capacity of capacitors for power factor improvement, a standard calculation method is used. The main objectives are:

  1. Determining your current Power Factor (PF_old).
  2. Setting a target Power Factor (PF_new) (e.g., 0.95 to 0.98).
  3. Calculating the total Active Power (Total kW) of your system.

Then, a mathematical formula is used to calculate the required reactive power (kVAR) that needs to be supplied by the capacitors.

Simply put:
Required kVAR = Total kW × (Tangent of current Power Factor angle – Tangent of target Power Factor angle)

For example, if your factory’s total load is 500 kW and the current power factor is 0.75, and you wish to improve it to 0.98, our engineers will accurately calculate the precise kVAR of capacitors needed using this formula. While you can use various online PFI calculators for a preliminary idea, consulting with BPIL’s experts is essential for precise sizing.

BPIL's PFI Panels: Quality and World-Class Components

At BPIL, we believe that manufacturing the best products requires the best materials. Our PFI panels are built using components from internationally renowned brands to ensure reliability, longevity, and maximum efficiency.

Capacitors: The Heart of the PFI Panel

Capacitors are the core components for power factor correction. If low-quality capacitors are used, they can fail prematurely, rupture, or even cause fires, leading to significant accidents. Inferior capacitors can also increase harmonics, which damages other electronic equipment in your system.

BPIL is committed to your safety. Therefore, we use only world-class, safe, and highly reliable capacitors:

  • EPCOS, Made in India (Technology – TDK Electronics, Japan): Renowned globally for their advanced technology and long-lasting performance.
  • ABB, Made in India: A well-known name in the power sector, famous for the high quality and reliability of their capacitors.

APFC Relay: The Brain of the PFI Panel

The APFC relay is the “brain” of the PFI panel, automatically controlling the capacitor banks. Using low-quality APFC relays can lead to inaccurate readings, unnecessary switching of capacitors, or failure to operate correctly at the right time. This can result in over-correction or under-correction, negatively impacting the electrical system and reducing the lifespan of the capacitors.

BPIL ensures maximum accuracy and efficiency for your PFI panel:

mikro, Malaysia: A trusted brand for APFC relays, known for its precision and durability.

Magnetic Contactors: For Reliable Switching

Magnetic contactors in PFI panels are used to switch the capacitor banks ON and OFF. Using low-quality contactors can lead to frequent failures, overheating, or sparking, which can be dangerous.

In BPIL’s PFI panels, we use:

  • Hyundai, Korea: Well-known for reliability and long-lasting performance.
  • Donga, Korea: A trusted name for high-quality electrical switching solutions.
